¡Pronounce Spanish Correctly!

Why settle for poor Spanish pronunciation? There are hundreds of jokes about "Otto and Fritz" and their poor pronunciation of Spanish. These two mythical German tourists represent all Gringos who mangle the Spanish language.

This doesn't have to be! Spanish is completely regular. You only have to learn 5 vowels and a few changes in the consonants that you already know.

Happily, those days are gone. Nowadays all citizens of the Americas are trying to learn the other's language as a means to greater understanding and mutual progress.

Of course, it takes listening and practice but one little tip is to recall that the "long" vowels in English, like the "e" in May, the "o" in toe, have a little "slide" at their end, either a "y" or a "u". That is why an English speaker ends up "smiling" after a word ending with a "long a", or "puckering" after an "o". The mouth of the Spanish speaker barely moves when he pronounces the vowels.

Here's another trick that might help you pronounce Spanish correctly. The consonants "p" and "t" are not pronounced with the puff of air that accompanies them in English. All you have to do to make a huge jump in your Spanish is to practice saying words with these letters, such as padre, pepa, Tomás, tabla, etc. with a lit match in front of your mouth. If the match goes out, you're speaking English.

Obviously the two examples just given are brief and crude explanations only meant to open the discussion that will be presented more carefully in the books you will find in the lists on this page.

Learn your vowels like Spanish speaking kids do: "A ,E, I, O, U ¡El burro sabe más que tú!
